S&T Awards Information Retrieval System

About STAIRS

Database

Motivation is one of the most important factors in the progress of human activities. The best motivation is the recognition of one's achievements through awards and rewards. A good number of awards in science and technology have been instituted in the country since independence, but there is no system in place that holds well compiled, organized and updated data and in web-enabled mode about the S&T awards of the country on periodic basis.

National Science and Technology Management Information System (NSTMIS), Department of Science and Technology, Govt, of India has played a catalytical role and brought out directories on S&T awards in 1994 and 2002. In 2017, the Society for Environment & Development (SED), Delhi, a scientific voluntary organization, was entrusted by NSTMIS division,DST to update the database and make it web-enabled for wider accessibility.

The basic purpose of this database is:

  • a) to provide all necessary information about the available S&T awards in India in one compilation;
  • b) to generate interest among S&T professionals of the country for the awards in their fields;
  • c) to create awareness about the awards and their sponsors, and to encourage R&D professionals to deliver their best.

The database is immensely useful for R&D professionals to know about the awards, sponsors of the awards, previous awardees and a host of other details. The database is searchable with sponsor’s name, award’s name, foundation year, city, subject, awardee name, etc.

This database is developed and designed by the Society for Environment and Development (SED), a leading S&T-based voluntary organization headquartered at Delhi and having Gramin Vigyan Kendra (Rural Science Centre) in village Digod of Kota district in Rajasthan.

NSTMIS Division:

National Science and Technology Management Information System (NSTMIS), a division of Department of Science and Technology (DST) has been entrusted with the task of building the information base on a continuous basis on resources devoted to scientific and technological activities for policy planning in the country.

Scientific and technological (S&T) activities play a vital role in the economic, social and physical development of a country. Scientific and technological research needs huge investments and calls for a judicious utilization of scarce resources like finance, trained manpower, raw materials, etc. Data collection and analysis pertaining to resources devoted to S&T, therefore, assume significant importance. The growth of S&T, its performance and impact on society and economy are indicators to assess the effectiveness of planning and policy formulation.
